Google today announced its new Chromecast with Google TV, providing consumers with a new affordable option for their streaming needs. While the device may not originally be on your radar, you may find renewed interest in the device because now we know it has a bootloader that can be unlocked by simply heading into the options.
according to AFTV NewsWhile going through the details of the new Chromecast with Google TV, the post discovered that the bootloader on the device can be unlocked. The best part is that it does not require any complicated steps, just head to developer options and toggle the OEM unlock feature on, and enable the bootloader unlock option. This comes as a bit of a surprise because the older Chromecast with Google TV (4K) that came out in 2020 doesn’t have this same option. Instead, users had to rely on an exploit, and going down this path was not easy, but it can be done if the user has the time and some patience.
By default, the new Chromecast with Google TV provides access to popular streaming services and thousands of apps. Due to its price, the model only supports HD quality, which means that it does not have 4K capabilities and also lacks Dolby Atmos sound. But, in return, Google can price it lower, offering it for just $29.99, which is a pretty good deal. Although some of the original Chromecasts relied on a smartphone connection, the new model can be used as a standalone unit thanks to Google TV. Moreover, setup is easy, and the remote control provides Google Assistant support.
As far as unlocking the bootloader goes, since this is a relatively new device, it will be interesting to see what kinds of things the community will conjure up. One thing to note, as pointed out AFTV News, is that the bootloader option might just be a bug, and it could be fixed in a future update. This update can come over the air or it can come directly from the manufacturer, which means that if this gets patched, you may be left looking for older stock. So, if you’re really interested, it might be a good idea to buy one ASAP.
