California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Republican governors would “play stupid” in their treatment of immigrants.
Newsom made his comments loud on Tuesday while speaking at a climate change meeting in New York CBS8 in Sacramento. This was just days after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis made headlines by flying migrants to affluent vacation hotspot Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.
“Those conservative governors out there, Greg Abbott and others, they’re as stupid as they want to be and they just double down on stupidity and we’re not going to follow their path,” he said at the Clinton Global Initiative meeting.
Newsom’s comments came after a Twitter exchange with DeSantis, in which DeSantis claimed Newsom’s hair products could be affecting his ability to think clearly. Newsom responded, tagging DeSantis and responding to a tweet by longtime journalist Dan Rather that suggested a primetime debate between opposing coast governors.
“Hey [Ron DeSantis], obviously struggling, distracted and busy playing politics with people’s lives,” Newsom tweeted. “Since you have only one overriding need – attention – let’s take that up and discuss it. I’ll bring my hair gel. You bring your hairspray. Give the time before election day.”

However, Newsom insists his disputes with Republican governors have nothing to do with future political aspirations, but some local experts say it’s time for Newsom to focus more on his home state.
“For Newsom to argue that he should be considered a national progressive leader, he really needs to show more progress in California on issues like homelessness, energy costs and transportation,” UC Berkeley political analyst and professor Omar Wasow told CBS 8 “California remains the number one poverty state.”
The California governor said in a recent campaign email that he’s not doing this because he’s running for higher office, but to be able to live with himself: “I have to sleep at night, and that means people like to.” confront [Texas Gov. Greg] Abbott and DeSantis,” Newsom wrote.
However, according to CBS 8, pollster Adam Probolsky said it was his belief that “voters not voting in the 2022 general election are not significantly more motivated than they normally are to vote on the basis of abortion or to vote on the basis of climate change.” and said Newsom appears to be focused on “building blocks” of a campaign.
“I think the governor probably thinks he’s solid for November and he wants to make a name for himself outside of California,” he said.
Newsom also recently started a billboard campaign in Republican states promoting access to abortion in California.
